On The Go

As I sit in a bustling Starbucks at 42nd and 9th in NYC, I consider a world on the go.  The strive to survive is observed daily on the streets here.  NYC is a city on the go.  Are you on the go?  From this event to that event until collapse just to do it all over again the next day?  Survival requires us to be on the go.  On the go is life, it is progress and pursuit, it is exhilarating and draining, it is inspiring and depressing, it is heaven and hell, it might be you and it is definitely me.

On the go can be intentional or random.  The choice lies within each of us in our pursuit of more.  It is almost always more…right?  More money, more power, more love, more friends, more houses, more cars, more rest, more exercise, more food, more hope, more control, more of what others have that we don’t currently possess.  This is to be human.  More of something keeps us on the go.

On the go is the way it is and what it is to be human.  Here are a few ideas to consider as you are on the go in pursuit of more:

Enough – How much is enough?  When it is enough of this, will it be enough of that?  Striving is important to living.  Only you can determine when enough is enough, but remember that when it is enough of this, it won’t be enough of that.  Pursuit of more is to be human.  Even the Dalai Lama is never going to have enough compassion, peace, or equanimity.  Every day we strive for a little more.  What is enough for you?

Reality – Do you seek more reality?  Do you live in reality?  What is reality?  It is extremely difficult to live in reality when we are on the go.  Our ego denies the acceptance of reality when it conflicts with our pursuit of more.  It justifies our pursuit by whatever means it can find and validate.  The reality is that we don’t have control.  We crave it.  We seek it, but it is always slightly out of reach.  The more reality we accept, the more peace we will have in our lives on the go.

Why? – Why are you on the go?  Are you running?  The why can be the ultimate validation.  Is it for you?  Is it for others?  Is it for a cause greater than you?  These are questions only you can answer.  There is no right or wrong answer to any question with the exception of the answer that denies reality.  Truth is tricky when considering why we do what we do.  In my life, getting the clarity on why has been elusive at times and crystal clear at other times.  When my why is aligned with helping others, there is a peace in my pursuit.  An example is when I write.  I write for you.  I write to challenge you to consider all possibilities, but more importantly live in reality.  The world is false fronts.  It is pretend.  It is a fabrication that is 100% constructed in our heads.  I won’t pretend to have the answers, nor am I naïve to believe I know what is real.  Not to get all woo-woo, but the reality is that we make things up to justify our lives, good or bad, acceptance or denial, love or hate.  Why is more of a choice than it is a question.

Serve – The longer I live, the more I realize that service is where the greatest satisfaction with life is found.  We grow in service.  The more people we serve, the greater our abundance.  The more we grow our capabilities to serve, the greater our value to the market.  I have written the following phrase countless times: “If you want more, serve more.”  More is a relative term that can be applied to anything you desire more if in your life.  If you want more love in your life, share more love with others.  If you want more happiness, share joy with others.  If you want more money, bring more value to the marketplace.  Life is reciprocal.  There is no lack of love, happiness, or money in the world, only a lack of service given to receive the benefit.  I want to mention this as well, you must be consistent and relentless.  Giving once, showing up once, loving once is not enough.  You must be consistent and persistent if you expect the world to reciprocate.

That is it, four questions to ask yourself.  Especially when your life is a hot mess.

  1. What do I desire more of in my life? Decide what is enough.
  2. Am I living my life or conforming? Live in reality.
  3. Why? Discover yours.
  4. How can I serve more? Create abundance.

Living on the go is how it is, but it does not have to leave you depleted and depressed.  When you remind yourself to live today with presence by asking yourself these questions regularly, you will find greater peace in pursuit.
